9 Dec 2014: Hot on the heels of the release of the final report of the Murray Financial System inquiry, the Australian Treasury has released a discussion paper on a regulatory framework for equity crowdfunding. The paper looks at a variety of models including the New Zealand scheme that commenced in April this year and the regime recommended by CAMAC in its June report. At this stage the Government does not have a preferred model and is seeking input by 6 February 2015.
8 Dec 2014: The Murray inquiry into the Australian Financial System has urged the Australian Government to regulate to permit equity crowdfunding. “A well developed crowdfunding system can aid broader innovation and competition in the financial system,” the report states. It goes on to highlight that this would require some adjustments to consumer protections to manage risks such as fraud, issuer failure and dilution.
